The Edmonton chapter of this musical festival is raising more than just the roof; it’s raising funds towards childhood cancer.
The Edmonton chapter of GEDFest held its event on October 17th, supporting the Ben Stelter Foundation. With its local and community-centered spirit, GEDFest YEG merged joy, music, and compassion for a night of rhythm and hope.
GEDFest is a volunteer-driven music festival tributed to Gord Downie, lead singer of Canadian band Tragically Hip who lost his battle against cancer in 2017. In the past 9 years of the festival, GEDFest has donated a whopping $732,000 to cancer charities and created chapters across Canada and the USA.
For the past three years, GEDFest has chosen to support the Ben Stelter Foundation as its beneficiary as both Ben Stelter and Gord Downie both suffered from the same type of cancer: Glioblastoma.
By supporting the BSF, GEDFest YEG has ensured funds from the event will go towards magical experiences and Ben Stelter Foundation hospital boxes, both providing joy in the lives of children with cancer. Impressively, the festival has surpassed the previous year in hospital boxes sold; 41 have been sold in 2026 compared to the 30 sold in 2025.
Neil Brown, events coordinator of GEDFest YEG, shared that the community-based nature of the event is what makes it truly meaningful to him.
“We have been a part of it since it was just one location in one night. GEDfest now has shows in 11 Canadian cities and one in Buffalo, New York across 2 different weekends. Each concert raises funds for a local charity. That way all funds raised stay local and impact their own communities.”
Additionally, GEDFest YEG is completely run by volunteer organizers and musicians. Their commitments and impact go to prove that passionate community-based initiatives are essential in creating meaningful change.
Through rhythms and beats, GEDFest YEG’s successful 2026 event proves that local, passionate actions are what fuel larger movements by uplifting communities and fostering hope.
