With each foot forward, Scandinavian Building Service’s Scandi Walk fundraiser has made much more than a step towards fundraising for pancreatic cancer research.
As Title Sponsor, the BSSF and Scandinavian Building Services have a shared goal of creating tangible change in the lives of those with cancer.
Terry’s Scandi Walk is an annual 5km fundraiser held nationally across various locations in Canada, and has supported charitable organisations such as ScandiCARE, as well as Pancreatic Cancer North America (PCNA).
Since 2020, Scandi Walk fundraisers have raised over $200,000 to raise awareness and support programs related to pancreatic cancer. In 2026 alone, the initiative has already raised $72,416 from the September 25th Scandi Walk annual event.
Joe Momoh, Marketing and Proposal specialist at Scandinavian Building Services, shared the most meaningful parts of the initiative were seeing a collective action towards the cause.
“We had 115 participants walking 5 km in communities across Canada, along with incredible support from colleagues, families, friends and donors. Seeing that collective effort and knowing everyone was walking to help raise survival rates for pancreatic cancer was incredibly meaningful.”
Terry’s Scandi Walk was established in honor of Terry Hay, who founded Scandinavian Building Services in 1982.
Beyond founding the company, Hays was known for his compassionate and generous heart. After losing his battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in 2018, his close family, friends, and businesses partners initialized Scandi Walk to forever commemorate the marks he had left.
But despite the successful course of the initiative, it has not gone without difficulty, as much like Protons Therapy, pancreatic cancer countinues to be underfunded and underrecognized. Much of this is due to limited awareness as well as the fact that many patients do not survive long enough to bring attention to the cause.
“Maintaining awareness and momentum year after year can be challenging, but seeing our community continue to step up reminds us why this work is so important.” says Momoh.
Through leaps and bounds into the future, the BSSF and Scandinavian Building Services will countinue to push forward in their mission of funding for those who need it the most: one step at a time.
